New technological capabilities should not be implemented all at one time. Getting there in steps is the safest way to succeed. Here are a handful of steps to take initially:
1. Assess immediate needs and infrastructure and determine what is most important among the following: financial savings, operational or drug costs, resident safety, or creating better efficiencies among staff.
2. Assign one or more facility champions to understand the technology and own the implementation process.
3. Organize the implementation process with timelines, clarity of responsibilities, and tracking of milestones.
4. Research information-integration preparedness, such as assessment of requirements, similarities, and dissimilarities.
5. Train, train, and re-train.
6. Use post-implementation support and ongoing tutorials to take full advantage of all capabilities, thereby increasing return on investment.
