Writer's Guidelines for Contributors to Provider Magazine

Provider is published monthly by the American Health Care Association. The magazine is distributed to 52,000 administrators, directors of nursing, and other care managers in nursing, assisted living, and post-acute facilities.

Each issue of Provider magazine includes several articles contributed by professionals in the long term care and related fields. These articles are intended to give providers practical, solutions-oriented information they can use to improve the quality of care and management in their facilities.

Articles should be concise and to-the-point. In general, contributing writers are encouraged to use examples to support their points, but should avoid lengthy anecdotal stories. The tone of Provider articles is serious and helpful, though not academic. Articles should run 1,200 to 1,500 words and must be written in the third person. In other words, authors should not address readers as “you,” or refer to themselves as “I.”

It is easier for editors to work with material that has not been formatted. In other words, do not bold or italicize any words or phrases. Please do not create any special symbols, such as bullets to itemize lists. Instead, use a double hyphen (--) in front each item in the list. Please double space between paragraphs, and do not indent.

Articles should be accompanied by the author’s name, title, educational degrees, address, and telephone and fax numbers. Upon acceptance, the article becomes the property of Provider and is subject to copyright ownership by Provider.

Provider magazine reserves the right to edit copy as needed for clarity and space. Authors may be asked to rewrite portions of an article or provide editors with additional information. Editors will make reasonable attempts to contact the author for review and approval of substantive changes to the article. Once the article is published, authors receive two copies of the magazine. Every attempt will be made to honor requests for additional copies.

Completed articles should be sent to the attention of Meg LaPorte, managing editor, at mlaporte@ahca.org. Please e-mail a copy of the article as a Word attachment.
